The Mexican government has announced a ban on the sale of e-cigarettes and other vaping devices amid concerns about their negative impact on people’s health, reports Medical Xpress.
Mexico has become the latest country to ban the sales of electronic cigarettes and vapes with President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador saying it was a “lie” to claim that e-cigarettes are a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes and adding that “the vapors are also harmful for health."
Lopez Obrador signed the decree introducing the ban on World No Tobacco Day and stressed how vaping devices were aimed to appeal to youths by showcasing a pink device, reports Medical Xpress. "Look at the colour, the design," he said.
The import and export of vaping devices and cartridges had already been banned in October however companies had still been selling their inventory up until now, according to Deputy Health Minister Hugo Lopez-Gatell.
Apart from the ban on e-cigarettes, the authorities in Mexico City announced that smoking of any kind is now banned in the Zocalo, the city’s main square, as well as in its surrounding areas.
