From tomorrow it will be illegal to puff on Melbourne's train and tram platforms, with ticket inspectors having the right to fine those who flout the law.
The laws — passed by state parliament last year — will also be enforced in all enclosed areas of cafés, restaurants and workplaces.
Smokers who are caught under the sheltered areas of platforms could face on-the-spot fines of A$ 154, or A$ 524 if the matter is settled in court. Smoking will still be allowed on areas of platforms that are not under cover. The ban will extend to 7,300 bus shelters, 950 tram shelters and 289 station platforms.
Smoking and the sale of cigarettes will also be banned at under-age music and dance events, along with 'buzz marketing' and non-branded tobacco advertising.
People will still be able to smoke in licensed premises until July next year.
Other exemptions include sole-operated businesses not frequented by visitors, inside vehicles, prison cells and immigration detention centres. (pi)
