This year’s Budget will see no change in taxation on tobacco products, after a sharp increase on cigarettes & co last year, reports Business Today.

Good news for smokers in India, as it has been revealed there will be no new taxes levied on tobacco products in this year’s Budget. Previously, there had been rumours that the Centre would raise the sin tax in order to increase much needed revenue in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"The likelihood of a tax hike for tobacco products and cigarettes was low in this year's budget as it was hiked sharply in Budget 2020," brokerage firm Edelweiss Securities said.
Although last year’s tax hike was not received well by the public, India as a country is still far below other nations when it comes to tax burden. According to Business Today, in a recent Tobacconomic report, India scored 1.88 out of 5 points in terms of tobacco tax burden. Many countries had an average of 4.5.
