Philip Morris has announced that it will be closing its cigarette production facility due to changing consumer behaviour and production overcapacity by the 1 January 2020, Spiegel Online reported.
Philip Morris said that the company decided to put its cigarette production in Berlin to a halt because returns from cigarette sales continue to drop in Europe as well as the overall demand for combustible cigarettes. According to the report, nearly 1,000 jobs are on the line. The company said that it would find fair solutions for its leaving employees. Roughly 75 positions will still remain intact at its production facility in Berlin and 25 other positions will be relocated to its facilities in Dresden and Gräfelfing, Spiegel Online reported.
