Plans to slash nicotine levels

According to The Wall Street Journal, the Biden administration is considering reducing nicotine levels in all cigarettes sold in the United States.

If the new rules are put into legislation, all tobacco companies would be forced to reduce the amount of nicotine in their products that are sold in the US. According to The Wall Street Journal, the Biden administration aims to have all cigarettes contain minimal or non-addictive levels of nicotine.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been trying to reduce nicotine levels in cigarettes since the 1990s, however so far, without success. The Agency was given the authority to regulate the manufacture, distribution, and marketing of tobacco products in 2009 through the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. This includes being able to lower nicotine levels, based on scientific evidence. The FDA states that cigarettes can cause cancer, heart and lung disease although nicotine is not the only component to blame, reports Business Insider.
Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that more than 480,000 deaths due to cigarette smoking are recorded in the US every year with over 41,000 deaths caused by second-hand smoke exposure, reports Business Insider.
