Police received complaints against smoking at public transport stations hours after a new bill that bans smoking there took effect on 1 January, according to the police web pages.
The law treats smoking at bus and tram stations and other public places as a misdemeanour that carries a fine of 1,000 crowns.
The police say they will not fine the transgressors for some time and will only rebuke them. Apparently many people do not know about the existence of the new law. The law bans smoking in schools, cinemas and theatres, sports halls, civil service buildings, public transport stations and on platforms and other public spaces.
Smokers in the Czech Republic unlike in many other countries of Europe are however allowed to smoke in restaurants. (pi)
