Police seized a record high 88 tonnes of tobacco, enough to make more than eight million packs of cigarettes, in raids on warehouses in southern Andalucia, the news agency Agence France-Presse said.
Six people were arrested in conjunction with the raids in Jaen and Almeira. Eleven people were detained in Jaen and Madrid, AFP said. The contraband tobacco had a street value of EUR 14 million (USD 15.6 million), AFP said, citing a finance ministry statement. The previous record haul was 41 tonnes, also in Andalucia, in 2015.
