A hotly contested ban on retail displays of cigarettes has been dropped from anti-tobacco legislation proposed for New York City, according to a report in the New York Times.

City councilors this week are expected to vote on the package that includes raising the minimum age to 21 for tobacco product purchases a ban on discount sales, the newspaper said. The display ban was opposed by a coalition of retail associations.
