Report: more countries require plain packaging

An international report by Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) has found that 25 countries and territories have either adopted plain packaging or are working towards enforcing it, according to a press release.

The CCS report, Cigarette Package Health Warnings: International Status Report, documented plain packaging enforcement across the globe, the size of health warnings on packaging in 206 countries and territories and the number of countries and territories that require graphic pictorial warnings on cigarette packaging.
According the report, 118 countries and territories currently require graphic warnings, which is equivalent to 58 per cent of global population. In addition to that, the CCS report found that 107 countries and territories currently require warnings to cover at least 50 per cent of the package front and back, and 55 of those countries and territories require warnings that are the size of at least 65 per cent of the package front and back.
Rob Cunningham, senior policy analyst of CCS, said, “It is extremely positive for global public health that almost 120 countries and territories have implemented picture health warnings and that so many are moving toward plain packaging.
“The international momentum poses a threat to tobacco industry sales worldwide and will save lives lost to cancer and other tobacco-related diseases.”
