Russia’s consumer rights agency, Rospotrebnadzor, announced that they will sue British American Tobacco for spreading misinformation and selling lower grade products than in Europe.
Gennady Onishchenko, director of Rospotrebnadzor, said that he had signed a lawsuit against BAT for "misleading" consumers and infringing upon their rights, but he refused to give details.
Onishchenko told reporters at a press briefing that producers viewed Russia as "an uncivilised market where they can sell dangerous and poisonous products".
BAT responded that it had received no claims from the regulator, but stressed it always acted inside the law. Market watchers said the suit was likely to focus on 'light' and 'superlight' cigarette pack labelling. (pi)
