Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court ordered the country's leading tobacco product manufacturer, Ceylon Tobacco Company (CTC), to cover 60 per cent of the front and back of cigarette packs with graphic health warnings, according to ColomboPage.
The ruling will come into effect for any packs released on to the market from 1 January 2015.
The Supreme Court’s verdict is a response to an appeal filed by CTC, Sri Lanka's subsidiary of British American Tobacco, against a lower court decision which directed the company to include pictorial warnings on cigarette packs.
The lower court had dismissed CTC’s application challenging government legislation for graphic warnings to cover 80 per cent of cigarette packs, although it had allowed for an amendment which reduced the allocated surface area to between 50 per cent and 60 per cent, reported the internet newspaper.
