The US Supreme Court let stand lower court rulings that allow Pennsylvania and Maryland to keep disputed Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) payments from tobacco companies, according to Reuters.
Reynolds America, Altria and other tobacco companies held the two states did not keep their end of the bargain to ensure companies not making MSA payments did not gain disproportionate market share over MSA participants, the news agency said. Pennsylvania was allowed to keep USD 125 million (EUR 113 million) from the 2003 MSA payment and Maryland USD 50 million.
