The fall of President Viktor Yanukovich could impact global health campaigners’ fight to restrict tobacco marketing, Reuters reported.
Yanukovich’s government took the lead in seeking to overturn Australia’s introduction of plain packaging laws for tobacco products by lodging a complaint with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in March, 2012. In what could prove a setback for tobacco companies, the Ukraine’s change of government and the country's financial problems now put the case against Australia into question, the news agency reported.
"I think in the circumstances that are now created in Ukraine of course it may be very difficult to find money to continue this dispute," a source at Ukraine's diplomatic mission in Geneva told Reuters.
