World Tobacco Process and Machinery Asia was the target of at least 100 student demonstrators who said machines on display at the trade show would serve to tighten the tobacco industry’s grip on the country, the Jakarta Post reported.
The demonstration comes against a background of strife between pro- and anti-tobacco forces over a controversial bill to regulate relations between tobacco growers and manufacturers, the newspaper said on its website.
A group of demonstrators reportedly was to meet with organisers of WT Process and Machinery, a two-day event held 27-28 April at the Jakarta International Expo.
