EU track & trace draft criticised

10 Oct 2017. European Commission draft proposals for tracking the flow of legal tobacco products to combat illicit trade were criticised as overly complex by key member states Germany, France and Italy, the Euractiv website reported.

A negative reaction to Commission implementation and delegation drafts also came from the EU distributors’ union, which wrote EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Vytenis Andriukaitis to say the “extremely cumbersome and costly” EU draft, “is considering tobacco products in complete isolation from other products.” Individual country complaints were not detailed by Euractiv, which describes itself as an independent pan-European media network specialising in EU policy issues.

The revised EU Tobacco Products Directive mandates implementation of an EU-wide track-and-trace system by May 2019.
